Grenoble - FRANCE

The Grenoble Alpes Métropole urban agglomeration (known as the Métro), is at the heart of an urban area counting more than half a million inhabitants. Located at the confluence of the Isère and Drac rivers, between the Belledonne, Vercors and Chartreuse mountain ranges, the Métro enjoys an exceptional mountain environment that offers a large range of leisure activities, in both summer and winter. Its economic dynamism, the potential of its research centres and university make it an extremely attractive territory.

The Métro, second largest metropolitan city in Rhône-Alpes, comprises 26 communes working together around a single shared goal: to improve the daily life of approximately 400.000 inhabitants. In a living area of almost 30.000 hectares, the Métro federates the energy of its member communes to organise, invest, build, fit out and complete major projects. Transport management, environmental protection, economic development and urban solidarity are the main missions of the Métro. The involvement of the urban agglomeration can be seen in the many areas where intercommunal cooperation enables joint projects to be completed for the benefit of all that a single commune could not take on alone.

What does the Métro do to organise transport? The Métro promotes and develops non-car modes of transport (cycle, pedestrian, public transport). Today, there are 300km of reserved cycle paths in the agglomeration and three outlets rent “Métro-vélo” bicycles to the public. The Métro contributes to improving the safety of “soft modes” by encouraging communes to create 30km/h zones to slow car traffic. The Métro carries out studies and projects to improve the operation of urban expressways (sound proofing, lighting, intersections, etc.). It coordinates the centralised management project of the various different modes of transport (“GMCD”). Finally, it contributes financially to the public transport union, paying 50 % of costs for the creation and management of bus and tram networks in the Grenoble agglomeration.
