Actions Tczew
Tczew motto is “Cycling Across Generations”.
The PRESTO project activities in Tczew include the following four actions:
Infrastructure planning
Bicycle lane network
The development of a bicycle lane network will be preceded with a creation of an online database about places where barriers to cycling exist. This will be a foundation of the first model of a comprehensive bicycle lane network in any Polish city. City planners will be given a list of easily applicable traffic solutions, such as places where linear barriers to cycling create difficulties for cyclists and which can be easily removed to facilitate cycling.
Promotion of urban cycling
Multigenerational cycling promotion
This item of the programme assumes that grandparents and parents will travel by bicycle to school with their (grand-)children. Such promotion of physical exercise through cycling will encourage cooperation between grandparents, parents, children and teachers. It will result in a reduction of car use for escorting children to schools, reducing congestion and parking problems near school buildings. These action are based on the bikeability campaign carried out in the United Kingdom, which was a model for the campaign planned in Tczew. Until now no such campaign has been carried out in any Polish city. The campaign will be carried out with the help of Senior Citizens Club, using advertisements, training sessions, leaflets, painting/ photography contests, etc.
Promotion of electrically assisted bicycles (pedelecs)
Demonstration of electric bicycles within the European Mobility Week
Activities which promote electric bikes are intended to change the perception and image of bikes. They will show, that owning a bike and using it does not mean at all lower social or material status. The change in perception is very important for many young people, who tend to think that owning a car advances their social status.
Within the framework of celebrations of the “In Town, without my car Day” a street cycle race is planned, with participation of two distinct groups. The first group will be composed of young, fit men on MTBs. The second group will be made of people who are over 40 years old, from particular areas of Tczew and such people as chimney sweeps, postmen, bakers and representatives of other professional groups, who will ride electric bikes. The aim of the race will be to check, whether people on MTBs are actually faster than people who ride electric bikes. Similar street races were organized in Stuttgart (Germany) and will be a model for such a race in Tczew. Till now no such event was organised in any Polish city.
Electric bicycles for professional use
Activities carried out in Tczew are intended to promote electric bikes as an alternative mode of transport for daily commuting. The aim of those actions connected with the promotion of electric bikes is to show, that the Tczew City Office on one hand promotes the reduction in costs resulting from the use of service cars for electric bikes, on the other hand it will indicate active involvement of the City Office in mitigating the CO2 emissions. The aim of the campaign is to persuade the largest possible group of people to test electric bikes on their own. A similar campaign has been carried out in Holland – in the city of Rotterdam.
