Starter, climber, champion cities

Once a city has committed itself to developing cycling as a mainstream daily transport mode, the challenge begins: how to go about it?

Of course, no two cities are the same. There is no one-size-fits-all model for making cities cycle-friendly. Not all tools and measures will have the same potential or priority everywhere. In the end, cycling policy needs to start from a thorough local analysis of cycling conditions, destinations, needs and desires, cultures and attitudes.

Nevertheless, it is possible to give some general guidance and PRESTO provides with a set of tools based on the "three cycling levels in cities" approach to help decision makers and city planners making cities more cycle-friendly.

  • The training material prepared for the five on-site training events approaches "STARTER", "CLIMBER" and "CAMPION" cities.
