The five PRESTO cities
PRESTO local activities on the three project pillars (Infrastructure, Promotion of cycling, and Promotion of electric bicycles) will take place in five European cities. These are Bremen (Germany), Grenoble (France), Tczew (Poland), Venice (Italy) and Zagreb (Croatia). They have different conditions as regards their cycling culture and will therefore benefit from PRESTO toolbox and mutual knowledge exchange in order to improve their cycling level.
Bremen is a CHAMPION city. Its modal share for cycling is around 30% of all daily trips. Although the cycling network has been developped extensively in the past years, the city is still working in cooperation with local ADFC branch (the German cycling federation) to keep people on their bycicles and improve bike accessibility, especially to festivals and big events which take place yearly. When there is so much people cycling around parking may become a serious problem for cyclists and a challange for the city administration!
Grenoble is a CLIMBER city. Its modal share for cycling is around 8%. The city aims to increase the number of people cycling by means of improving the existent cycling network and make it safer for cyclists to move around.
Tczew is a STARTER city. Its modal share for cycling is only 2% but there is huge potential for development of cycling culture in Poland! The city has established a Bike Office in 2009
and has appointed young and dinamic staff to involve the inhabitants in multigenerational cycling-related activities and spread the word about benefits of cycling for all. To engage new people a number of electric bicycles will be tested by professionals and other workers (e.g. city officials, deliveries, postmen, teachers, etc.) who could see for themselves the benefits of using a bike in their daily life.
Venice is a CLIMBER city. Its modal share for cycling is around 18%. Cycling is quite popular in Italy but safety issues may affect the use of bicycle in cities as a daily transport mode. The city therefore needs to tackle "black spots" for cyclists along the network by means of a new urban design in order to make cycling safer at junctions and intersections.
Zagreb is a STARTER city. Its modal share for cycling is only 1%. The city has planned to develop a Bycicle Plan in the next years and to improve overall facilities for cyclists (i.e. parking). The promotion of electric bicycles in Zagreb has a double scope: to engage new target groups who are usually not considered by traditional promotion campaigns (i.e. seniors, people with health problems); to make cycling easier for all in hilly areas. Zagreb will launch a "try-out-pedelec" initiative involving local and national VIPs.
